Stephen King's book On Writing has some very interesting takes on the notion of writing (composing the first draft) vs. rewriting (editing).  My favorite statements are "Write with the door closed; Rewrite with the door open." and "Write for yourself, Rewrite for the audience."

And allow me to add my own thought: "Write from the heart.  Rewrite from the mind."

I enjoyed Chris Baty's No Plot? No problem -- it's about the National Novel Writing Month contest (which I plan to participate in this year if grad school isn't kicking my butt), but more importantly, it's about being able to set a deadline to get the juices flowing and shutting off the internal editor so we can get the first draft done, but then releasing the internal editor to be able to whip the first draft into shape.  Plus it's a fun read.
